Custom Cardboard Counter Display Units (CDUs) for Retail, Pharmacy, Beauty & Gift — From 100 Units
Pro Custom Packaging produces counter display boxes and custom cardboard CDU packaging for UK brands, retailers, and product businesses selling through point-of-sale environments. Our counter display boxes — also known as counter display units (CDUs) or countertop display boxes — are produced in E-flute and B-flute corrugated board with full-colour print, custom dimensions, and header card, tiered shelf, or open tray construction. Specified to fit your product, your counter space, and your retail environment from a minimum order of 100 units.
A counter display box — also called a counter display unit (CDU) or countertop display — is a freestanding cardboard unit that sits on a retail counter, checkout desk, pharmacy dispensing counter, or shop till point to hold and present multiple units of a product for impulse purchase. The product is visible, accessible, and positioned at the exact moment a customer is pausing — at a checkout, at a service counter, or browsing a display surface.
Counter display boxes differ from shelf packaging in a fundamental way: they do not need to compete for shelf space because they occupy counter space that most retailers have available at no additional listing cost. For brands without shelf placement, a CDU is the fastest way to get a product in front of customers in a physical retail environment. For brands that already have shelf placement, a CDU at the counter drives incremental impulse sales on top of planned shelf purchases.
Cardboard CDUs are the dominant format for consumer brand counter displays in the UK because they are lightweight, cost-effective per unit, fully printable, recyclable, and can be produced in any dimension to fit the counter environment and product size.
The simplest counter display box construction — a printed open-top tray with four sides and a base. Products sit inside the tray in a single row or grid, depending on the tray dimensions. No separate header card. The lowest cost CDU format. Suitable for products where the product itself is the visual draw — beauty testers, confectionery, small gift items, pens and stationery, and accessories displayed loose. E-flute corrugated at 1.5mm for a clean print surface on the exterior. Available with a front lip (a lower front panel to retain products) or open-front for easy customer access.
An open tray with a vertical header card extending above the product well. The header card carries the brand name, product messaging, logo, and any promotional copy — it is the element visible above the products at counter level and at eye level from a standing customer. Header card CDUs are significantly more effective at driving awareness than plain tray CDUs because the header is seen before the product, creating context and brand identification. The header can be shaped — straight top, arch, wave, or custom die-cut shape — for additional visual impact. The most widely used CDU format for branded product launches in UK pharmacy, gift, and beauty retail.
A counter display box with two or more internal shelf levels, allowing products to be displayed across multiple tiers within a compact footprint. The stepped or tiered construction ensures every product is visible — rear products are not hidden behind front products. Used for ranges with multiple SKUs (different flavours, shades, or sizes displayed together), products sold in pairs or sets, or any application where a larger product volume needs to be displayed in a limited counter footprint. Constructed from B-flute or EB double-wall corrugated for the structural rigidity required to support product weight across multiple shelf levels. Front lip and full header card available on tiered formats.
A counter display box with an angled base that feeds products forward automatically as the front unit is removed. Used for tube products, bottled items, cylindrical packaging, and any product that benefits from a self-facing display without manual restocking. The angled base ensures the last product in the unit is as visible and accessible as the first. Common in pharmacy for lip balm, hand cream, and personal care tubes; in food retail for confectionery bars; and in beauty for mascara and eyeliner tubes.
A closed-front counter display box with a full-wrap printed exterior and an open-top product well. The closed front carries full brand graphics across all visible exterior surfaces — front, sides, and back — creating a display that presents as a branded unit rather than a functional tray. Used for premium product launches, gift boutique placements, and any brand where the counter display itself needs to communicate brand positioning rather than purely holding products. Constructed from E-flute corrugated with litho-laminated exterior for retail-quality print on a corrugated substrate.
CDU dimensions are one of the most common briefing mistakes people make in retail packaging. A counter display box built to the wrong dimensions either does not fit the counter environment or is rejected by the retailer before it reaches the counter. Here is a practical guide to counter space dimensions across the most common UK retail environments where CDUs are placed.
Independent pharmacy counters: Counter depth is typically 300–400mm. A CDU footprint of 200–250mm deep by 150–250mm wide is the practical working range for independent pharmacy counter placement. A height of 200–300mm to the top of the header card is generally accepted. Taller units risk being moved or collapsed by staff. Shallow-depth tray CDUs with header cards work best in this environment.
Boots, LloydsPharmacy, and national pharmacy chains: These retailers have specific counter placement guidelines and CDU approval processes. Counter space is managed centrally — CDUs must be pre-approved by the category buyer before placement. Standard approved CDU footprints typically run 200mm wide × 150mm deep for high-traffic checkout counters and up to 300mm wide × 200mm deep for lower-traffic in-aisle service counters. Contact the relevant category buyer at the brief stage to confirm approved dimensions before production.
Independent gift shops and boutiques: More flexible on dimensions than chain retailers. Counter depths of 400–600mm are common. CDU footprints of up to 300mm wide × 250mm deep are generally practical. Header card height of up to 400mm can work in boutique environments with taller counter displays already present. Aesthetics matter more in boutique environments — branded counter display boxes with litho-laminated exterior are worth the additional cost for boutique placement.
WH Smith, newsagents, and convenience retail: High-traffic checkout counters with limited space. CDU footprints of 150–200mm wide × 120–150mm deep are the practical range. Low-profile units (under 200mm total height including header) preferred. Products must be easy to grab and replace without the CDU shifting — a weighted base or deep front lip is useful in high-traffic environments.
Beauty salons, spas, and treatment rooms: Retail counter displays in treatment environments typically use smaller, premium-finish CDUs. Footprint of 150–200mm wide × 150mm deep. Branded counter display boxes in kraft or litho-laminated corrugated with soft-touch or foil finish. Low height — up to 250mm — to avoid obstructing client interaction across the counter.
When requesting a quote, advise us of your target retail environment, and we will confirm the most practical CDU dimensions for that counter type before your dieline is prepared. A CDU produced to the wrong dimensions for its intended retail environment is unusable — getting the dimensions right before artwork is approved is the most important decision in the CDU brief.
Lip balm, hand cream, pain relief sachets, vitamins, supplements, eye drops, personal care accessories, and medical device accessories. Gravity feed CDUs for tube products. Header card CDUs with MHRA-compliant product information on the header panel. E-flute corrugated for clean counter display in a clinical environment.
Lipstick, mascara, nail polish, false lashes, brow products, skincare sachets, cosmetic packaging boxes, and travel-size beauty products. Tiered shelf CDUs for multi-shade or multi-SKU beauty ranges. Branded display boxes with litho-laminated exterior for premium beauty boutique and salon placement. Inside-facing print on the tray base for brand reinforcement at restocking.
Candles, reed diffusers, small ceramics, greetings cards, keyrings, jewellery, and seasonal gift box items. Open tray CDUs for loose display items. Header card CDUs for branded gift ranges. Kraft board construction for natural or artisan gift brand positioning. Boutique-scale dimensions for independent gift shop counter placement.
Chocolate bars, energy bars, snack pouches, chewing gum, mints, and impulse food items. Gravity feed CDUs for bar format products. FSA food-safe board specification required to carry food packaging boxes — inks and coatings used on internal surfaces of food-adjacent CDUs must be food contact compliant. Open tray formats for loose confectionery display.
Pens, pencils, notepads, erasers, accessories, small tech accessories, and promotional merchandise. Open tray or tiered CDUs sized to the product. Euro-hole tab integration available for products with hang-sell packaging that need to be displayed vertically rather than laid flat in the tray.
Wax melts, reed diffuser samplers, candle votives, candle boxes, soap boxes and fragrance accessories. Header card CDUs for the branded candle range display at gift and homeware retail. CLP-compliant label panel space required on the CDU header if any product information appears on the display unit itself — we build this in as standard for fragrance-containing product CDUs.
E-flute corrugated (1.5mm): The standard material for counter display boxes requiring printed branding across the exterior surfaces. Thin profile, smooth liner face, clean print surface suitable for full-colour CMYK or litho-laminated print. Sufficient rigidity for most single-shelf CDU applications and open tray formats holding products under approximately 2kg total load. Custom Corrugated boxes are the correct choice when print quality and compact dimensions are the priority.
B-flute corrugated (3mm): Higher structural rigidity than E-flute. Used for tiered shelf CDUs where multiple shelf levels need to support product weight without deflection, and for CDUs holding heavier products (glass jars, bottled items, ceramic goods). Print surface slightly less smooth than E-flute, but adequate for most brand applications at digital or flexographic print.
EB double-wall corrugated (4.5mm): E-flute and B-flute combined. Used for larger CDUs holding substantial product weight, CDUs designed for floor-level display (near the counter rather than on it), and any application where structural rigidity is a primary requirement alongside quality print. The exterior E-flute liner delivers a smooth print surface while the B-flute inner provides the structural strength.
SBS Cardboard 350-550 GSM: For smaller products and cardboard boxes are also more cost-effective than corrugated material. Cardboard counter display boxes UK are the most popular used custom display boxes.
Digital printing: Full-colour print applied directly to the corrugated liner. No plate charges. Suitable for 100 units. The practical method for custom counter display boxes at low-to-mid volumes, where brand colour accuracy is important but exact Pantone matching is not critical. Best colour output on cardboard counter display boxes uk
Offset Printing: An SBS sheet is printed by offset printing to retail-standard quality, then laminated onto the corrugated board. The result is a counter display box with photographic-quality print indistinguishable from a folding carton. The premium print method for branded CDUs placed in premium retail environments — boutiques, beauty salons, department stores, and any retail environment where the display unit itself is judged by the retailer. Available from 100 units.
Flexographic printing: Ink is applied directly through a relief plate. Cost-effective for 1–3 colour designs at high volume. Used for plain trade CDUs, promotional display units, and counter display boxes where brand print is secondary to structural function.
Counter display boxes work because of where they sit in the retail customer journey. A customer at a checkout is in a confirmed purchase state — they have already decided to buy something. The psychological barrier to adding a low-cost impulse item at that point is significantly lower than at any other point in the store visit. Research consistently shows that products displayed at the till point are purchased by between 30–70% more customers than the same product on a standard shelf location, depending on category and price point.
Three factors determine whether a CDU achieves that uplift or sits ignored on the counter.
First, the header card must communicate the product’s value proposition in under three seconds — the dwell time at a checkout counter. A clean brand name, a single benefit statement, and a price point are sufficient. More copy reduces impact. The header is not a brochure — it is a headline.
Second, the CDU must hold the correct quantity of product. A CDU that runs out of stock before it is restocked loses its selling function and occupies counter space for no purpose. Size the CDU depth and product capacity to your restocking frequency — a CDU visited weekly should hold at least a week’s worth of sales volume.
Third, the product must be accessible without the CDU moving. A front lip of 20–30mm retains products without impeding access. For products that need to be physically lifted from the CDU (glass jars, bottled items), an open-front tray at a low front height is easier to shop than a deep tray that requires reaching in.
We review these three factors — header design, product capacity, and access — with every CDU brief before the dieline is prepared.
A counter display box — also called a counter display unit (CDU) or countertop display — is a freestanding cardboard unit that sits on a retail counter, pharmacy till, or checkout desk to hold and present multiple units of a product for impulse purchase.
Our minimum order is 100 units across all counter display box formats. No die or plate charges apply to any order quantity.
We work with custom counter display boxes, so we can produce them as per your exact requirements.
A CDU (Counter Display Unit) sits on a counter surface — checkout desk, service counter, or reception. It is compact, lightweight, and positioned at the point of purchase transaction. A shelf display unit or FSDU (Free Standing Display Unit) is larger, floor-standing, and positioned in the main retail floor area. CDUs are typically lower cost, easier to place without retailer approval, and more effective for impulse purchase categories. FSDUs provide greater product volume but require more retailer negotiation for placement.
E-flute corrugated at 1.5mm is the standard for most counter display boxes — it provides a smooth print surface for full-colour branding and sufficient rigidity for single-shelf tray CDUs holding products up to approximately 2kg total load. B-flute is used for tiered shelf CDUs and heavier products. EB double-wall is used for larger CDUs or applications requiring maximum structural rigidity. Cardboard display boxes are used for small and light weight items and is the most cost effecient amongst all options.
Digital printing is the practical choice for 100 units — no plate charges, full-colour output, and fast turnaround. Offset Printing delivers photographic-quality print for premium retail environments (boutiques, beauty salons, department stores) where the CDU exterior must match the quality of retail shelf packaging. Flexographic printing is cost-effective for high-volume, low-colour-count CDUs where structural function takes priority over premium print quality.
Standard production is 15–20 working days from approved artwork. If your CDU is for a specific retail launch date or seasonal campaign, advise us of the required in-hand date when enquiring so we can confirm the timeline before order is confirmed.
Products that sell best from CDUs share four characteristics: a price point suited to impulse purchase (typically under £15 for UK mass retail, under £30 for boutique and gift environments), a compact individual product size that fits a tray format, a clear single benefit that communicates in under three seconds on the header card, and a category with natural point-of-sale relevance (lip care and hand products at pharmacy checkouts, confectionery at food retail, small gifts and accessories at gift boutiques). Products that require explanation, comparison, or considered purchase decisions are less suited to CDU display than to shelf placement with more dwell time.
